My previous posts explained what an LLC is but in case you missed those, the term LLC is an abbreviated form for Limited Liability Company. Before we get any deeper into the meaning of LLC’s for business, please note, I am not providing any legal or tax advice here.
An LLC is a business entity which helps protect or shield business owners’ personal assets from any debts or liabilities the business incurs. An LLC is a business structure in the United States that offers personal liability protection – it is similar to a corporation in that aspect.
LLC’s are popular business entities for established and new business owners. Some large companies you may be very familiar with such as Coca-Cola, Nike and IBM are set up as LLC’s. The great thing is you can get the same awesome protection as them…. you can set up an LLC as a single member LLC – meaning you are the only business member. So your small business is protected like the big boys.
LLC requirements vary from State to State so it is important to understand what all your State requires, but in most cases, it is fairly simple to set up an LLC. Aside from your personal asset protection, LLCs are often deemed more credible to your potential customers as well as other business entities that your business would need to interact with – for example your bank may take you more seriously if you have an LLC.
If you are a small business or even just in the planning stages of business, it just makes good sense in most cases to form an LLC! It would be very risky to go it without one, you could lose everything!
So, now that you know that an LLC is a business entity in the US used to shield an owner’s personal assets, you may want to dig a little deeper. We encourage you to read our other posts or watch our videos on YouTube to get an even better understanding of limited liability companies.
